SCREEN Holdings Co., Ltd. and the Osaka University Graduate School of Engineering established the SCREEN MIRAI Laboratory on July 1, 2024. The creation of the institute is intended to reinforce R&D related to semiconductors and new fields over the long term. Also, it aims to collaboratively foster innovation that will contribute to business growth.
As digital transformation (DX), green transformation (GX), and such new technological fields as generative AI advance, efforts to realize smaller and more complex semiconductor devices have been accelerating. Developing increasingly sophisticated semiconductor processes requires the explanation of nanoscale physical phenomena as well as technologies to control them.
To Enhance Collaboration
Until now, SCREEN and Osaka University have collaborated on R&D on specific fundamental technology topics across a wide range of fields. Among them are life science and manufacturing technologies related to making semiconductors smaller and more complex.
Mainly, with the establishment of the collaborative research institute at Osaka University, they aim to further strengthen their collaboration. Primarily, the Institute will deepen collaboration on existing research and promote further coordination and development over the long term. To achieve these, the institute will combine simulation and experimental approaches to advance the development of cutting-edge processes.
Also, it will pursue new R&D themes. By aligning research at Osaka University with SCREEN’s business strategies, the institute aims to realize new technologies and their real-world application. In addition, it will help develop young researchers with high levels of expertise to further bolster collaboration between academia and industry.
Masaki Yoshioka, Managing Executive Officer, Senior R&D Strategy Officer, SCREEN Holdings Co., Ltd., said, “For SCREEN, the collaborative research institute will serve to promote innovation across wide-ranging fields, including semiconductor technologies. In line with SCREEN’s purpose, ‘Innovation for a Sustainable World,’ the institute will foster innovation through collaboration between academia and industry. Thus, it will help to solve social issues and realize a sustainable future. In addition, by deepening this collaboration, we aim to develop young talent that will be the backbone of innovation in the future.”
