Dai Nippon Printing Co., Ltd. (DNP) has newly designed the system components used with liquid crystal display (LCD) module backlights. Particularly, those that suit notebook computers.
The company said these components are now available to its clients. Compared with the design of currently available standard components, the newly designed system components are thin. Most importantly, achieves high luminance and wide viewing angles.
These components feature a Light Guide Plate (LGP), a reflector, and a prism that refracts light. Moreover, DNP has improved brightness by adjusting the prism arrangement (the convex portion of the triangle) so that it is turned against the standard and faces the light emitting surface of the LGP.
In addition, in answer to the challenge of narrow viewing angles due to the positioning of the prism, DNP also improved light utilization efficiency by devising an LGP and a reflector. Thus, achieving both high luminance and a wide viewing angle by optimizing the prism shape design.
Offering these newly designed system components makes it possible to both cut parts numbers and reduce power consumption. At the same time, contributes to reducing CO2 emissions. At the same time, we have also achieved a thinner product.
DNP can design and supplying these newly designed system components in their totality, making it possible to optimize performance in line with client requirements.
It is also possible to achieve high luminance by increasing light utilization efficiency, and a wide viewing angle by optimizing the prism shape design. Furthermore, as it is also possible to reduce the number of parts compared to currently available standard systems, a thinner backlight unit can be achieved. The LGP can be made as thin as 0.4mm.
Increasing light utilization efficiency, contributes to the reduction of backlight unit power consumption. This makes it possible to reduce the size of the batteries in notebook computers, leading to a reduction in the overall weight of the equipment.
Recently, the industry has witnessed increased interest in corporate management that takes into consideration Environment, Society, Governance (ESG). Furthermore, attention has been focused as well on environmentally friendly products and services. The newly designed system components will reduce the number of components, achieve low power consumption, and contribute to reduced CO2 emissions.
DNP will provide the newly designed system components to panel manufacturers that manufacture various displays. This includes those for notebook computers. DNP said it aims to achieve sales, including those from related components, of approximately 2.0 billion yen by FY 2025.
