Wolfspeed Lands Major Funding for Defense Chips

Wolfspeed has secured a conditional commitment for up to US$1.5 billion in long-term financing from the U.S. Department of War (DoW). Accordingly, the move could significantly strengthen the domestic supply chain for wide-bandgap semiconductors and bolster U.S. defense-related electronics capabilities.

The 30-year commitment, announced by the Durham, North Carolina-based semiconductor company, would support the development and production of silicon carbide (SiC) materials and wide-bandgap power devices. The financing also aligns with national security priorities by supporting advanced semiconductor technologies used in defense, aerospace, artificial intelligence, communications infrastructure and critical industrial systems.

The proposed funding represents another step in Wolfspeed’s long-term strategy to reinforce its U.S. manufacturing footprint while expanding capabilities in both silicon carbide and gallium nitride (GaN), two semiconductor technologies increasingly viewed as essential for next-generation power and radio-frequency applications.

Focus on Defense, Advanced Communications

According to Wolfspeed, the financing would help upgrade its GaN epitaxy capabilities for next-generation communications infrastructure and electronic warfare systems. The company also plans to develop radiation-hardening capabilities for current SiC products and future GaN technologies, an important requirement for aerospace and defense environments.

“SiC and GaN have critical national security applications,” said Robert Feurle, Chief Executive Officer of Wolfspeed. “With this financing, the company would be well positioned to not only continue to serve the DoW but also expand its capabilities for the benefit of U.S. national security as a whole.”

The initiative would leverage Wolfspeed’s existing manufacturing and technology base across North Carolina, New York and Arkansas. The company plans to strengthen its silicon carbide materials leadership, expand domestic low- and high-voltage GaN device production, advance GaN-on-SiC radio-frequency wafer technology and establish radiation-hardening capabilities within the United States.

Long-Dated Capital to Enhance Financial Flexibility

Beyond technology development, the proposed financing could provide Wolfspeed with additional long-term capital to support strategic investments and improve financial flexibility.

“We believe the scale and 30-year tenor of this conditional commitment reflects the long-term importance of the technology and manufacturing capabilities Wolfspeed has built in the United States,” Feurle said. “This financing would strengthen our continued advancement of silicon carbide materials and wide bandgap power devices.”

Chief Financial Officer Gregor van Issum described the commitment as a significant milestone in the company’s efforts to optimize its capital structure.

“This conditional 30-year commitment represents another significant milestone in our ongoing efforts to optimize Wolfspeed’s capital structure and improve our financial foundation,” van Issum said.

The commitment remains subject to due diligence, definitive agreements, regulatory approvals and other closing conditions. If finalized, it would rank among the most substantial long-term financing initiatives supporting domestic wide-bandgap semiconductor manufacturing in the United States.
