In recent years, demand has been growing dramatically for connected and autonomous vehicles, specifically with the influx of 5G automotive-grade modules.
Advanced connectivity features have been sought after by consumers and businesses alike to meet needs of low-latency but high-speed communications. For that reason, 5G technology inside vehicles has been rising.
Because of this trend, LG Innotek has introduced what it said as the world’s first Third Generation Automotive 5G Communication Module. Specifically, this supports satellite communication over 5G New Radio Non-Terrestrial Network (NR-NTN) with a bandwidth of approximately 30MHz.
What is Automotive 5G Module?
The Automotive 5G Communication Module is a component installed inside a vehicle that enables data communication with network infrastructure, such as base stations and satellites, using 5G technology. It is an essential component for Software-Defined Vehicles (SDVs) and autonomous driving.
Previously, 5G communication modules with satellite connectivity operated on narrowband (NB-NTN) channels with a bandwidth of about 0.2MHz. With data transmission speeds limited to several hundred kilobits per second, such modules were suitable for only low-volume data applications, such as text messaging.
However, what narrowband satellite communication modules can offer could not meet the requirements of carmakers to propel advanced autonomous driving. Moreover, it has limited capacity for high-volume data transmission.
To develop this product, LG Innotek leveraged the world-class vehicular communication technologies that it has been building up since 2005. Based on these capabilities, LG Innotek was able to introduce a number of solutions for the vehicular communication module market. These include the world’s first First-generation Vehicle 5G Communication Module, the Second-Generation 5G-V2X Communication Module, and a Digital Key Solution.
Essentially, 5G technology supports real-time data exchange between vehicles, infrastructure, and other entities, enhancing safety and enabling features like adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assistance, and automated parking. This trend reflects the shift towards more advanced and intelligent transportation systems.
Advanced Features of 3rd Gen 5G Module
LG Innotek’s ‘Third-generation 5G Communication Module’ delivers data transmission speeds that are hundreds of times faster. In fact, it can reach tens of megabits per second than existing 5G satellite communication modules. Moreover, data transmission latency has been reduced to a few hundred milliseconds from several seconds.
Therefore, this component enables vehicles to seamlessly send and receive large volumes of data—such as voice audio, images, and video—at high speeds anytime, anywhere, making advanced communication services a reality.
Furthermore, the Third Generation 5G Communication Module of LG Innotek complies with international standards for wide adoption across various countries and vehicle models.
LG Innotek plans to begin mass production of its ‘Third-generation 5G Communication Module’ by the first quarter of 2026, aiming to accelerate the company’s expansion in the global automotive communication module market.
