Sumitomo Bakelite’s Taiwanese subsidiary, Sumitomo Bakelite Taiwan Co., Ltd., has recently concluded the construction of its new factory in Kaohsiung, Taiwan. Recently, the company held a completion ceremony attended by government officials, key government executives, and other stakeholders.
Sumitomo Bakelite Taiwan manufactures semiconductor encapsulants.
Accordingly, the Sumitomo Bakelite Group has 40% market share for semiconductor encapsulants, the global top share to date. It has been producing products in the Taiwanese market since 1999 as the only major local manufacturer.
The company believes the semiconductor market will thrive further. Thus, demand for its ecosystem products will grow further as well. For that reason, the company has planned since 2021 to augment its Taiwan operations with a new factory and ensure sufficient supply capacity.
Chen Chi-Mai, Mayor of Kaohsiung City led government officials who attended the completion ceremony. On the other hand, Kazuhiko Fujiwara, President, Sumitomo Bakelite, led company executives and representatives.
“We have been producing semiconductor encapsulates in Kaohsiung since 1999 and we are approaching our 25th year already,” said Fujiwara.
In addition, Fujiwara said the expansion of supply capacity through the new plant will further strengthen the power of local production. Moreover, it will stir the consumption in the Taiwanese semiconductor market industry, which continues to grow over the long term.
The company is gearing up to start the operation of the new plant in July.
With the operation of the new factory, the production capacity of Sumitomo Taiwan will double. Thus, strengthening local production for local consumption in the Taiwanese semiconductor market.
Furthermore, the new factory will also strengthen the company’s grip on the semiconductor market in Southeast Asia. It also has a base in Singapore, Sumitomo Bakelite Singapore Pte. Ltd. For that reason, the company will be in a good position to meet the demand surge in applications such as power semiconductors and automotive semiconductors.
“We aim to reliably respond to any increase in demand with cutting-edge technology and the highest quality products and services,” said Fujiwara.
