Micron Technology, Inc. has made aggressive moves last week to in cementing its global expansion plans after it broke the ground its US$100 billion memory mega fab site in New York and sealed its intent to acquire Powerchip Semiconductor Manufacturing Corporation’s (PSMC) P5 fabrication site in Tongluo, Taiwan for US$1.8 billion.
The New York fab, which will have up to four fabs, will be the largest semiconductor facility in the United States that will generate approximately 50,000 jobs. Micron’s Central New York project will be home to the most advanced memory manufacturing in the world and will help meet the growing demands of AI systems and devices that are central to the modern economy.
“Breaking ground at Micron’s New York megafab underscores our commitment to building leading‑edge memory at scale in the United States,” said Sanjay Mehrotra, Chairman, President and CEO of Micron Technology.

In addition, Mehrotra said, “As the global economy enters the AI era, leadership in advanced semiconductors will be the cornerstone in innovation and economic prosperity. Our investments and progress solidify our position as the only United States manufacturer of memory.”
The New York project is a cornerstone of Micron’s approximately US$200 billion broader U.S. expansion vision. This also includes two leading-edge high-volume fabs in Idaho, the expansion and modernization of its existing manufacturing fab in Virginia, advanced HBM packaging capabilities, and R&D. Micron said all of these will drive American innovation and technology leadership.
These investments support Micron’s goal of producing 40 percent of its DRAM in the United States and are expected to generate approximately 90,000 U.S. jobs.

According to Micron, production in the New York mega fab is expected to start in 2030 with the fabs ramping throughout the decade.
Meanwhile, the intent to acquire PSMC’s P5 site in Tongluo will include an existing 300mm fab cleanroom of 300,000 square feet and will further address Micron’s growing global demand for memory solutions.
The agreement with PSMC also aims to establish a long-term relationship between Micron and PSMC for Micron’s post-wafer assembly processing and to support PSMC in its legacy DRAM portfolio.
