Unique Business Model Propels Vehicle Development Plan

ONO SOKKI CO., LTD. has started a business to sell measurement data of electric vehicles (EVs). Particularly, it leverages the measurement technology it has used to support the development in the automotive industry.

The company purchased Yuan PLUS (ATTO3), a sport utility vehicle (SUV) made by China’s largest EV manufacturer BYD and obtained various data. An advantage of this business is that it can sell measurement data inexpensively compared with cases where individual companies measure data by themselves.

Automakers and Tier 1 suppliers can focus on development, while referring to the competitor’s vehicular data by using the performance of other companies’ EVs as a benchmark. Thus, ONO SOKKI hopes a wide range of companies will consider the reports useful. These companies will include manufacturers of sound absorbing materials, tires, and electric wires.

ONO SOKKI explains its intention of starting the new business, “We will confront the global EV market enthusiastically as all Japan.”

Reliable Evaluation, Report

Meanwhile, pertaining to data acquisition, the company’s Yokohama Technical Center in Kanagawa Prefecture measures and analyzes noise vibrations (NV) in its Acoustics Laboratory.  On the other hand, the Automotive Testing Laboratory within Utsunomiya Technical & Product Center in Tochigi Prefecture measures and analyzes power performance.

In addition, ONO SOKKI performs running test at Shirosato Test Center (Ibaraki Prefecture) of Japan Automobile Research Institute (JARI). The company creates reports based on evaluations of multiple items.

ONO SOKKI’s laboratories test electric power consumption and cruising range using the Worldwide harmonized Light vehicles Test Procedure (WLTP) mode. Most importantly, this is the exhaust gas and fuel efficiency test method adopted in countries in Europe. The driveshaft torque of the test bench provides the measurement of the output characteristics.

Additionally, regeneration characteristics are evaluated through brake pedal operation by a robot. In the test course of JARI, the company measures vibrations, sounds, running resistance, and other parameters of the motor and inverter.

ONO SOKKI will provide reports on NV from July and release reports on thermal management by the end of the year. Going forward, the company plans to provide reports on an all-wheel-drive (AWD) car of BYD’s four-door sedan SEAL.

“We would like to sell reports (on EVs) at a pace of two to four vehicles a year, focusing on China’s EVs,” noted ONO SOKKI.
