Theobroma Develops New Single-Board Computer for AMR

Theobroma Systems Design und Consulting GmbH has released a single-board computer (SBC) specifically designed for robust and reliable autonomous mobile robots (AMR). Called JAGUAR SBC-RK3588-AMR, the new single-board computer suits industrial automation applications.

JAGUAR features Rockchip’s high-end ARM-based SOC RK3588. Moreover, a variety of interfaces allow the integration of a broad range of sensors, actuators, and communication modules. Among them are high-resolution cameras, LiDAR and ToF sensors. Meanwhile, the octa-core CPU and the Neural Processing Unit (NPU) provide the required processing power for simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM). Also, they enable detection of obstacles to avoid collisions while navigating autonomously.

“On a single board, JAGUAR provides a cost-efficient and optimized processing platform for AMRs to be produced in series. It comes with a board support package (BSP) optimally configured to the hardware and runs on Linux supported by Debian and Yocto. As a result, JAGUAR helps significantly shorten the product development cycle of our customers,” said Dr. Stefan Roth, Managing Director at Theobroma Systems.

Peak Performance for Autonomous Mobile Robots

The RK3588 features four ARM Cortex-A76 at 2.4GHz and four ARM Cortex-A55 at 1.8GHz. Also, it integrates a Mali G610-GPU and an NPU with up to 6 TOPs. It opens up a wide range of possibilities for artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning applications.

Multiple Interfaces

Two SuperSpeed USB 3.1 interfaces enable connection of high-resolution cameras, stereo cameras or sensors such as 2D and 3D LiDAR as well as ToF sensors. Four MIPI-CSI interfaces allow the cost-efficient connection of high-resolution cameras.

CANBUS, RS-485 and Gigabit Ethernet ensure seamless integration into the robot. Two PCIe slots host LTE, WiFi or Bluetooth and an NVMe/SSD. Finally, an optional “mezzanine” extension board, which plugs into a dedicated port, enables the use of a wide range of additional interfaces.

A variety of interfaces are available on the JAGUAR SBC-RK3588-AMR.

Single Power Supply and Cooling Concept

A single power source with a voltage range of 12 to 24V powers the compact 135×93mm JAGUAR SBC board. While consumption is a moderate 18W under load, it delivers up to 35W for devices connected via PCIe and USB.

At the bottom of the PCBA is the RK3588 processor as the highest element, which allows for a simplified thermal connection to the housing.

Ready for Secure Cloud Services

Additionally, JAGUAR’s Secure Element is Common Criteria (EAL6+) certified. It ensures government-grade security for identification and key storage. This enables cloud services, such as remote software management and preventive device management, to be rendered in accordance with the highest level of cybersecurity.
