Hanwha Precision Acquires Group's Front-end Chip Equipment Line

Hanwha Precision Machinery (HPM), a specialized subsidiary of Hanwha in manufacturing solutions, has acquired the front-end semiconductor equipment business of Hanwha Corporation/Momentum. Specifically, the acquisition includes R&D, manufacturing facility, and human resources. Accordingly, this will complete HPM’s semiconductor business portfolio with both front- and back-end equipment technology and capability.

Hanwha Precision Machinery has been a leading Korean manufacturing solution provider in high-end equipment for over 35 years. HPM covers a wide range of businesses from IT products, vehicle, solar energy and medical supplies. For the semiconductor equipment market, Hanwha Precision Machinery has already in the back-end process business since 2016. Utilizing its world-class pick and place technology from the mounting business, HPM enhanced and developed the die bonder and flip-chip bonder for semiconductor process. Both are in the market already servicing major semiconductor makers in Korea.

Mainly, the newly acquired front-end semiconductor business is involved in the deposition process – one of the eight major production semiconductor processes. The business consists of Atomic Layer Deposition (ALD) and Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD), which require a high level of precision and accuracy.

Total Solutions Provider

Further, HPM is embarking on its journey to become a total solution provider for the advanced semiconductor equipment business. Specifically with this acquisition, it now has both front and back-end processes in its portfolio.

Sung Soo Lee, CEO of Hanwha Precision Machinery

Hanwha Precision Machinery’s new CEO, Sung Soo Lee, announced the acquisition during the company’s town hall meeting. CEO Lee commented, “we will move forward with the new business model as an advanced manufacturing creator, expanding our business in semiconductor with our skill and know-how from our SMT and CNC business”.

HPM is planning to showcase the new semiconductor business at SEMICON Taiwan in September.

Hanwha Precision Machinery has been a leading manufacturing equipment and software solution maker in Korea since 1989. Its headquarters is collocated with R&D center in Silicon Valley of Korea – Pangyo. Meanwhile, its manufacturing facilities are in Changewon – near the second biggest city in Korea, Busan.
