Sekisui to Soar Capacity, Sets up New R&D Base

The High Performance Plastics Company of Sekisui Chemical Co., Ltd. has decided to increase production capacity at its Musashi Plant in Hasuda City in Saitama Prefecture. Specifically, it will increase for SELFA®, a highly adhesive, easy-to-peel UV tape used in the advanced semiconductor manufacturing process.

Moreover, the company also confirmed it will establish a new R&D base in Taiwan. Accordingly, this will be capable of evaluating and analyzing semiconductor-related materials, including SELFA.

Investment Background

The highly adhesive and easy-to-peel UV tape SELFA® combines high adhesion with easy peeling by UV irradiation. Particularly, this generates gas between the tape and the substrate. Thus, reducing adhesion to zero and allowing easy peeling. This allows even thinly polished wafers to be processed without damage. Customers These excellent properties by customers, particularly for cutting-edge semiconductors for AI (artificial intelligence) and high-speed communications, and for automotive power semiconductors, contributing to the development of the semiconductor market. Thus, the company predicts that the market will reach US$1 trillion in 2030, approximately double the size of 2023.

Because the demand will continue to expand in the future, Sekisui Chemical will increase its production capacity and strengthen our quality control level. This will help establish a stable supply system and meet high quality requirements.
In addition, the company also decided to establish a new R&D base in Taiwan (Hsinchu City), where important customers are actively developing cutting-edge technologies.

“This will enable us to conduct evaluations and analyses in close proximity to our customers, and we aim to anticipate and respond to increasingly sophisticated needs,” said Sekisui. Moreover, the company said this will help in accelerating the development of new semiconductor materials including this product, and expanding their adoption.

Future of Semiconductor Business

Accordingly, the company will infuse 5 billion Japanese yen in total investments for the expansion of capacity of Musashi plant and the new R&D base in Taiwan.

Aiming to expand into the semiconductor field within our electronics-related business, we will begin with a semiconductor materials R&D base in Taiwan, and then consider expanding to Korea, the U.S., etc. Going forward, we will continue to work toward realizing more comfortable and convenient lifestyles and a sustainable society through the development and provision of highly functional, high added-value products that contribute to solving social issues.
