Japanese Firms Set Sights on New Power Supplies

Japanese electronic component makers are actively developing technologies for power supply-related products. Mainly, they are developing new products such as power electronic components and next-generation rechargeable batteries in response to the shift to xEVs in automobiles and the increased current capacity of industrial equipment and renewable energy devices.

Primarily, they aim to contribute to higher current capacity and efficiency in power supply systems. Moreover, these companies target to contribute to the stable supply and effective use of energy. To this end, they strengthen the technological development of power supply-related components that will solve the issues of promoting energy conservation and higher efficiency in equipment and devices, electrification of automobiles, and the shift to renewable energy.

At POWER SUPPLY JAPAN, a power supply system exhibition within TECHNO-FRONTIER 2024, key Japanese electronic component manufacturers presented their latest power supply-related products and solutions.

TDK-Lambda

TDK-Lambda Corporation exhibited its HVDC solution for the renewable energy market. The EZA11K-SU is a series operation optional unit, which is under development. It can handle high voltages of up to 1500V by operating up to six units in series. Particularly, the EZA11K-SU meets the demand for higher voltages in the renewable energy market and contributes to the stable supply and effective utilization of energy associated with the shift to renewable energy. TDK-Lambda plans to start selling the product in October.

Nichicon

Meanwhile, Nichicon Corporation introduced its new UBR Series of leaded aluminum electrolytic capacitors for high voltage input for telecommunication base stations, rated at 450V and guaranteed for 5000 hours at 125°C. Mainly, the UBR Series has achieved 2.5 times longer life than the existing UBT Series, and is designed to meet the needs of high temperature and maintenance-free applications.

TOKIN

For its part, TOKIN Corporation exhibited a 5.5V automotive-grade capacitor that complies with the AEC-Q200 Rev.E (2023 edition) automotive standard.

According to TOKIN, this is the world’s first 5.5V automotive-grade capacitor compliant with AEC-Q200 Rev.E (2023 edition). TOKIN developed the FMC0H334ZF 5.5V/0.33F, the industry’s first 105°C high-temperature capacitor, and the FU0H105ZF 5.5V/1F, which has the industry’s longest life of 4000 hours at 85°C. TOKIN will propose these products for power supply backup in small current applications of 500µA or less, such as RTCs (real-time clocks), central gateways, automatic driving/ADAS, and in-vehicle infotainment.

Sumida

Sumida Corporation presented a reference exhibit of an electromagnetic induction coil module capable of non-contact power transmission at 3.6kW or higher, which is currently under development, for non-contact charging of electric vehicles (EVs). The size of the exhibited coil module is 60×60cm for the transmitting coil and 42×30cm for the receiving coil. Sumida aims to start mass production in a few years.

Suwa Sansha Electric

Suwa Sansha Electric Co., Ltd. displayed the newly developed AD67 charge/discharge control unit, a standard product for various infrastructures. This product integrates a charge controller and various DC-DC units, and achieves excellent charge efficiency through its unique MPPT control. It solves the problem of independent power supplies for outdoor use.

Rubycon

Rubycon Corporation presented the new 105°C long life, high capacitance, low impedance ZLR Series aluminum electrolytic capacitor lead wire type. Compared to the existing ZLH series of the same size, the ZLR Series offers up to 40% higher capacitance, around 10% higher ripple, and lower impedance, achieving the industry’s top specifications.

Mainly, the ZLR Series uses a new high-performance electrolyte with improved high conductivity for low impedance. The high-performance electrolyte is combined with a highly airtight sealing material to maintain long-life performance. Furthermore, the electrode foil is made with higher magnification to increase the capacitance of the capacitor.

Maxell

Maxell, Ltd. introduced all-solid-state batteries with high heat resistance of 125°C, long life, and high safety for infrastructure and plant monitoring equipment. Mainly, Maxell is promoting these batteries for applications such as IoT devices, monitoring equipment, and RTC/memory backup as next-generation power sources that support a sustainable society.
