UMC to Accelerate AI Growth With New Expansions

United Microelectronics Corporation (UMC) has approved a phased expansion strategy aimed at addressing increasing customer demand driven by artificial intelligence (AI) and edge-computing applications. The company’s board has authorized the immediate expansion of cleanroom capacity in Singapore while also commencing construction of a new fabrication facility shell at its flagship Tainan campus in Taiwan.

The dual-track investment approach is designed to satisfy near-term customer requirements while creating the infrastructure needed to support future growth opportunities. UMC said the strategy helps shorten future capacity lead times while ensuring capital spending remains aligned with long-term customer commitments.

AI Adoption Reshapes Semiconductor Demand

According to UMC Chairman Stan Hung, rapid adoption of generative AI is transforming technology requirements across multiple markets.

“The rise of generative AI has fundamentally shifted the technology landscape, accelerating demand for technologies enabling higher performance, higher bandwidth, and greater system integration,” said Hung.

He added that the company’s phased expansion plan is intended to balance operational agility with financial discipline as AI-related demand continues to grow.

Singapore Expansion Focuses on Silicon Photonics

As part of the initiative, UMC will invest in cleanroom installations and equipment purchases for the Phase 4 (P4) facility in Singapore. Because the building shell is already in place, the company expects to expand capacity more efficiently as customer demand increases.

The expansion will also strengthen UMC’s silicon photonics capabilities, a technology area that is increasingly important for next-generation computing and data-intensive applications.

“This phased strategy allows UMC to maintain exceptional capital discipline, minimizing upfront depreciation while securing our position at the forefront of the AI-driven future,” Hung said.

New Tainan Fab Supports Long-Term Technology Roadmaps

In Taiwan, UMC will construct a new fab building designed to accommodate future Phase 7 (P7) and Phase 8 (P8) facilities. The development is expected to provide additional manufacturing flexibility and support the company’s long-term technology plans.

The new Tainan facility will further reinforce Taiwan’s role as UMC’s primary manufacturing and research hub while expanding the company’s advanced packaging footprint.

Meanwhile, the Singapore investment strengthens UMC’s largest production site outside Taiwan, contributing to geographic diversification and improved supply chain resilience.

Together, the projects are intended to enhance UMC’s ability to deliver scalable manufacturing capacity for technologies that support future cloud and edge AI applications, positioning the company to address evolving customer requirements in a rapidly changing semiconductor market.
