Micron to Surge Taiwan DRAM Grip, Closes PSMC Fab Deal

Micron Technology has completed its acquisition of Powerchip Semiconductor Manufacturing Corporation’s (PSMC) P5 fabrication site in Tongluo, Miaoli County, Taiwan, strengthening its manufacturing footprint as it scales production of advanced memory technologies.

The transaction, first announced in January 2026, transfers ownership of the Tongluo P5 site to Micron. The facility will complement Micron’s existing operations in Taiwan and operate as an extension of the company’s vertically integrated mega campus in Taichung, located approximately 15 miles away.

Eyes Second Phase Expansion

The Tongluo site includes about 300,000 square feet of existing 300mm cleanroom space. Micron said the facility will support efforts to expand supply of leading‑edge DRAM products, including high‑bandwidth memory (HBM), to address growing demand driven by artificial intelligence workloads.

Following the initial announcement of the acquisition earlier this year, Micron began preparing the site for integration. With the transaction now complete, the company plans to begin retrofitting the existing cleanroom. Micron expects the facility to support meaningful product shipments from the current fab beginning in fiscal 2028.

In parallel, Micron is planning a second phase of expansion at the Tongluo location. Construction is expected to begin by the end of fiscal 2026 on a second facility of comparable scale, which would add approximately 270,000 square feet of additional cleanroom space.

“The Tongluo facility complements our Taiwan operations and is a critical component of our global expansion plans,” said Manish Bhatia, executive vice president of global operations at Micron Technology. He added that memory plays a strategic role in AI product performance and that the phased ramp of the site strengthens Micron’s ability to address emerging market opportunities.

Micron also acknowledged the role of PSMC and support from Taiwan’s central and local government agencies in completing the transaction. These include the Ministry of Economic Affairs, the National Science and Technology Council, Hsinchu Science Park, and the Miaoli County Government. The company cited collaboration across government, construction partners, and equipment and materials suppliers as enabling a swift acquisition process and future capacity expansion.

Micron Technology supplies DRAM, NAND, and NOR memory and storage products for markets spanning data centers, AI systems, consumer electronics, and industrial applications.
