Sepion Opens New Battery Separator Coating Plant in California

Sepion Technologies has opened one of North America’s largest separator coating facilities for lithium-metal batteries (LMBs). Sepion, headquartered in California, is a leading battery product company focused on advancing LMBs for electric vehicles (EVs) and e-mobility applications,

This cutting-edge facility features 100 percent renewable-energy-powered building that spans 25,000 square feet. Thus, it increases Sepion’s separator coating capacity by 1,000-fold and polymer synthesis scale by 100-fold. Also, it enables the production of up to 10Ah pouch cells. These enhancements will expedite the transition of Sepion’s LMB separator coatings from prototype to pilot-scale production in collaboration with leading automotive OEMs.

The new facility increases Sepion’s separator coating capacity by 1,000-fold and polymer synthesis scale by 100-fold.

During the opening of the plant, Peter Frischmann, CEO and Co-Founder of Sepion Technologies, remarked, “Today marks a major milestone in our journey to transform the EV landscape and sustainably power humankind. We are proud to pioneer advancements that not only benefit the e-mobility industry but also contribute positively to our planet’s well-being.”

Sepion’s groundbreaking separators are designed using a closed loop, data-driven materials development program. Specifically, the program combines computational chemistry, machine learning, and experimental electrochemistry. Accordingly, it will accelerate the safe replacement of graphite anodes with lithium-metal and boost e-mobility range by 40 percent or more. At the same time, it will deliver a considerable improvement in fast-charge performance.

With a focus on scaling its products using established roll-to-roll manufacturing processes, the company ensures gigafactory compatibility with minimal switching costs. Sepion’s products will empower battery cell manufacturers to maximize the potential of their gigafactories. Specifically, they offer a 40 percent increase in energy output and faster capital payback.

“The opening of our lithium-metal separator coating facility represents a major leap forward in our production capacity and reaffirms our commitment to environmental sustainability,” shared Zahid Shafi, Vice President of Operations at Sepion.

Sepion is actively developing separator products and sampling with Fortune 100 automotive companies and global battery suppliers. The company stands ready to reshape the industry by ushering in lithium-metal battery technology. Also, it will deliver affordability, longer range, and faster charging for EV manufacturers.
