Seiko Instruments Inc. has tapped renewable energy as the power source of all its five manufacturing sites in Japan. For that reason, Seiko Instruments has achieved 100 percent renewable energy use starting April 1.

Most importantly, this will reduce Seiko Instruments’ CO₂ emissions by approximately 18,000 tons per year.

Non-Fossil, Hydroelectric Power Plants

A subsidiary of Seiko Group Corporation, Seiko Instruments manufactures and sells electronic components, precision components, and other related products.

The five units that will switch power contracts are Takatsuka Unit in Matsudo-shi, Chiba; Ohno Unit in Ichikawa-shi, Chiba; Sendai Unit in Sendai-shi, Miyagi; Akita Unit in Daisen-shi, Akita; and SII Crystal Technology Corporation in Tochigi-shi, Tochigi.

Three of them, Takatsuka, Ohno, and SII Crystal Technology, will transition to electricity supply plans that combine non-fossil certificates.  Essentially, TEPCO Energy Partner, Incorporated designated them as renewable energy. Meanwhile, the remaining two, the Sendai and Akita units, will tap hydroelectric power plants. Particularly, in Tohoku and Niigata, provided by Tohoku Electric Power Co., Inc.

Sustainable Manufacturing Operations

The Seiko Group has committed to achieving “Net Zero” greenhouse gas emissions from its business operations by 2050. Thus, striving to reduce its environmental footprint.

Moreover, each of its operating companies is actively working towards this goal.

In Japan, Seiko Group Corporation, Seiko Watch Corporation, and Wako Co., Ltd. have already achieved 100 percent of their electricity consumption from renewable energy sources. Thus, the entire Seiko Group, including Seiko Instruments, aims to accomplish 100 percent renewable energy adoption in Japan by the end of FY2024.

The Seiko Group remains committed to energy conservation efforts and accelerating the reduction of CO₂ emissions. This commitment involves promoting various measures, including transitioning to renewable energy power contracts, installing solar panels, and implementing on-site/off-site Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs).

Through these initiatives, the Seiko Group aims to contribute significantly to the realization of a sustainable society.
