NGK to Advance Hybrid Substrates in New Alliance

NGK INSULATORS, LTD. has announced investments in PanelSemi Corporation, a Taiwan-based startup engaged in the development and sale of flat-panel flexible LED displays and substrates for semiconductor modules.

PanelSemi develops and sells ultra-thin and lightweight flexible LED displays with low power consumption and high brightness, leveraging its thin-film transistor (TFT) circuit fabrication technology. Furthermore, PanelSemi is using this technology to develop a hybrid circuit board. Specifically, it fabricates fine wiring and functional circuits on polyimide film and integrates it with a ceramic substrate.

It is expanding its business to include high-performance circuit boards for semiconductor modules for wireless communications and opto-electronic integration*.

Combining Hybrid Substrates with Ceramic Products

In partnership with PanelSemi, NGK is developing new technologies and products by combining PanelSemi’s circuit fabrication technology with NGK’s products. Specifically, they include ultra-compact and thin lithium-ion rechargeable battery EnerCera, ceramic substrates, and ceramic packages.

Through this investment, NGK will strengthen the collaborative partnership with PanelSemi as it strives to further expand digital society-related businesses, which are one of NGK’s priority fields.

In the NGK Group Vision: Road to 2050, which is a medium- to long-term corporate vision, the NGK Group has identified contributing to the digital society as one of the social issues it should address. Moreover, the NGK Group has adopted New Value 1000 (NV1000), under which it aims to achieve at least 100 billion yen in sales of newly launched products by 2030.

Mainly, the NGK Group is actively developing new products and businesses in collaboration with external alliance partners. Looking ahead, the NGK Group will continue working to create new value through investments in and partnerships with global startups.

*Opto-electronic integration: a technology for converting electrical signals into optical signals. It is expected to speed up communications and data processing, while reducing power consumption.
