Micron Technology has opened a new state-of-the-art training center in Boise, Idaho, as part of its broader effort to strengthen the U.S. semiconductor workforce and support the rapid expansion of advanced memory manufacturing.

The newly launched Micron Training Center (MTC) spans 60,000 square feet and is designed to provide hands-on technical instruction for new hires, students and career changers pursuing opportunities in semiconductor manufacturing. Located near Micron’s Boise campus, the facility combines immersive onboarding programs with practical training in fab operations and manufacturing systems.

The investment aligns with Micron’s long-term plan to expand domestic semiconductor production. The company said the center will help build the skilled workforce required to support its commitment of investing more than US$250 billion in U.S. semiconductor manufacturing initiatives, which are expected to generate more than 90,000 American jobs.

Industry Collaboration Creates Real-World Learning Environment

A key feature of the training center is its use of semiconductor process equipment that mirrors production-floor conditions. The facility houses up to 20 process tools that replicate a fab environment, enabling trainees to gain practical experience before entering full-scale manufacturing operations.

Several leading semiconductor equipment suppliers, including Applied Materials, Lam Research, SCREEN, Kokusai Electric and Tokyo Electron, supported the installation of the equipment. In addition to employee training, the tools will be used for vendor training programs, helping accelerate operational readiness across the semiconductor ecosystem.

Education Partnerships Deepen Talent Development

The center also strengthens Micron’s partnership with the College of Western Idaho (CWI), creating new pathways into semiconductor careers.

Beginning this fall, CWI will offer its Advanced Mechatronics Engineering Technology and Semiconductor Manufacturing Technology programs at the new facility while continuing courses at its Nampa campus. The center will also become the primary location for the technical instruction component of Micron’s Registered Apprenticeship Program.

To further support workforce development, Micron and the U.S. Department of Commerce have provided US$3 million to CWI for educator compensation, equipment and classroom space.

Boise Mayor Lauren McLean highlighted the regional impact of the initiative, saying, “Our community invests in our people, and the Micron Training Center is proof of that promise. This center is built to skill up the next generation of Idahoans, whether they’re just starting out or making a career pivot.”

She added, “With strong partners standing beside us, we’re filling today’s jobs and preparing our workforce for the future.”

Supporting America’s Semiconductor Ambitions

As semiconductor manufacturers increase domestic production capacity, workforce readiness has emerged as a critical industry challenge. Through hands-on training, apprenticeship opportunities and collaboration with education providers and equipment partners, Micron’s new Boise center is designed to help address that challenge while creating a scalable talent pipeline for the next generation of advanced semiconductor manufacturing in the United States.
