Valeo and ROHM Co-Develop New Power Modules

Valeo Group, a leading automotive parts manufacturer, and ROHM Co., Ltd., a major semiconductor and electronic components manufacturer, aim to develop next-generation power modules for traction inverters. To this end, they are bringing together their know-how in power electronics management.

Mainly, the two companies will combine their expertise in the field of power electronics to promote joint development. As a first step, ROHM will provide the TRCDRIVE pack™ silicon carbide (SiC) molded module for Valeo’s next-generation powertrain solutions.

Valeo is expanding its footprint for efficient electric mobility across a variety of vehicle types and markets. These range from small vehicles such as e-bikes to mainstream passenger cars and even large e-trucks. Also, Valeo’s expertise in mechatronics, thermal control and software development, combined with ROHM’s power modules, drives power electronics solutions that contribute to the performance, efficiency, and decarbonization of automotive systems around the world.

Valeo and ROHM have been collaborating since 2022. They have been exchanging technologies aimed at improving the performance and efficiency of traction inverters, which are key components in the propulsion systems of electric vehicles (EVs) and plug-in hybrid (PHEV). The two companies will optimize the cost performance by optimizing cooling through better power electronics and improving heat dissipation through mechatronics integration to achieve high efficiency. In addition, the use of a SiC package improves the reliability of the entire system.

“Together, we aim to accelerate the transition to more efficient and affordable electric mobility by setting a new industry standard for high-voltage inverters.” commented Xavier DUPONT, CEO of Valeo Power.

“ROHM’s TRCDRIVE pack™ will help improve power efficiency by delivering high power density. Through our collaboration with Valeo, we will contribute to the development of highly efficient powertrains.” Wolfram HARNACK, President of ROHM Semiconductor GmbH, commented.

These advancements are essential to meet the demand for longer range, faster charging capabilities, and high-performance, affordable inverters for BEVs and PHEVs.

Valeo plans to start supplying the first series of the project in early 2026. Valeo and ROHM will contribute to the efficiency and miniaturization of next-generation xEV inverters.

Background of TRCDRIVE pack™

TRCDRIVEpack™ is a trademark for SiC-molded modules developed for traction inverter drives. This product features, like high power density and unique terminal arrangement, help solve the key challenges required for traction inverters. They include miniaturization, high efficiency, and reduction of man-hours. Since SiC can perform low-loss power conversion at high voltages, the combination of Valeo’s component, housing processing, and thermal control technologies with ROHM’s power modules will create a synergistic effect. Valeo and ROHM will improve the performance and efficiency of traction inverters through collaboration in automotive power electronics and contribute to the realization of a decarbonized society.
