TVs to Use Less Power With Fuji’s New PFC Control IC

Fuji Electric has released the FA1C20N critical mode interleaved power factor correction (PFC) control IC. This proprietary control technology reduces the number of system components. Thus, eliminating the need for AC input voltage detection resisters and phase compensation circuits.

The FA1C20N works in combination with FA6C60N series LLC current resonance control ICs. For that reason, enabling improved efficiency under light loads and lower standby power by utilizing burst operation control. It smoothly switches between burst, single, and interleaved operation, depending on PFC output power, to achieve a high power factor.

Reduces Environmental Impacts of TVs

Recently, there has been growing need for lower standby power consumption in equipment and devices such as TV, not just to reduce electricity costs but also to minimize environmental impact.

In general, TVs, even when turned Off, consume a small amount of power even on standby mode.

When used in combination with Fuji Electric’s FA6C60N Series LLC control ICs, the FA1C20N can achieve input power of 300mW or less at an output power of 150mW. (Credit: Fuji Electric)

The FA1C20N of Fuji Electric contributes to the reduction of standby power in TVs. It is suitable for large TVs of 75 inches or larger that use a 300W to 1kW power supply. Specifically, demand for such electronic component is high from TV makers in Asia.

Fuji Electric noted the timeliness of the integrating FA1C20N PFC ICs to TVs as manufacturers aim to reduce environmental impact of power consumption of TVs even on standby mode.

Works in Tandem

By linking with Fuji Electric’s LLC current resonance control IC FA6C60N Series, the input power is less than 300mW when the input is 90V to 264V AC and the output is 150mW.

Moreover, TV makers, which have already adopted FA6C60N, will not have to use PFC control ICs from other makers with the introduction of the FA1C20N.

The FA1C20N eliminates the need for an AC input voltage detection resistor or phase compensation circuit, which also contributes to the reduction of power supply components. It also features a high power factor, achieving a power factor of 95 percent or more at 230V AC input and 50 percent of the maximum output power.

In addition, Fuji Electric’s unique technology allows you to smoothly switch between operating modes and adjust switching points. The FA6C60N series detects the load, and when the load is light, it switches from normal operation to burst operation with the FA1C20N.

The FA1C20N package is a 6×9.9mm “SOP-16”, which is said to be suitable for replacing PFC control ICs made by other companies. As for applications, it is envisioned as a power supply for high-end PCs such as large monitors, industrial power supplies, and gaming in addition to large TVs.
