SEMI Sees 300mm Fab Spending Hit $227B by 2029

Global semiconductor manufacturers are expected to sustain aggressive investment in 300mm wafer fabrication capacity through the end of the decade, with front-end fab equipment spending projected to reach $227 billion by 2029, according to SEMI’s latest 300mm Fab Outlook report.

The forecast points to a continued expansion cycle driven by rising demand for semiconductor manufacturing capacity and an increasing number of fabrication projects moving from construction to production. SEMI estimates global 300mm front-end equipment investment will reach $149 billion in 2026, representing a 31% increase from the previous year, before continuing double-digit growth through 2029.

The outlook suggests that capacity expansion is becoming increasingly visible across the industry as new facilities and production lines advance toward commercial operation.

Capacity Expansion Moves Beyond Planning

SEMI expects 20 new 300mm fabs or production lines worldwide to begin construction in 2026, followed by another 18 projects in 2027, excluding facilities dedicated solely to research and development.

At the same time, fab startup activity is expected to increase. The industry association projects that 13 new 300mm fabs or production lines will begin operations or make initial silicon shipments in 2026, with that number rising to 23 in 2027.

According to Ajit Manocha, President and CEO of SEMI, the investment pipeline reflects growing confidence in future semiconductor demand.

“The expanding demand for semiconductors is steadily translating into a real increase in manufacturing capacity in the global semiconductor industry.”

He added that current forecasts indicate continued growth in equipment spending alongside a significant number of fab projects progressing toward operation.

“This expansion in production capacity will provide the manufacturing foundation to support a wide range of next-generation semiconductor applications, including AI and high-performance computing.”

Construction Spending Continues to Rise

The report also signals sustained growth in fab construction activity. Global investment in 300mm fab construction is forecast to increase 23% year over year to $47.5 billion in 2026 and a further 33% to $63.3 billion in 2027. Construction spending is projected to reach $68.4 billion in 2028.

SEMI said the spending reflects continued investment in manufacturing capacity for advanced logic and memory technologies based on 300mm production platforms.

Americas Gain Momentum

The Americas are expected to remain a major contributor to the expansion cycle. SEMI forecasts regional capital expenditures will rise from $18.1 billion in 2026 to $40.6 billion by 2029 as new manufacturing facilities are added.

In the United States, three new 300mm fabs or production lines are expected to begin construction in 2026, followed by four additional projects in 2027.

The Q3 2026 edition of SEMI’s 300mm Fab Outlook incorporates 166 updates across 163 fabs and production lines worldwide, including 14 newly added facilities since the previous report, underscoring the pace of investment activity across the global semiconductor manufacturing landscape.
