Sumitomo Bakelite to Pull Start-ups in New Investment

Sumitomo Bakelite Co., Ltd. has announced it decided to invest in UMI No. 3 Investment Limited Partnership. Specifically, UMI is a fund formed by Universal Materials Incubator Co., Ltd., a venture capital firm specializing in investments in the materials and chemical industries.

In recent years, with the increasing complexity of the external environment, the needs from functional chemical manufacturers have also diversified.

To solve various issues, it is important to introduce new technologies and products to the market with a sense of speed using internal and external resources.

Purpose of Investment

Thus, to create new products and solutions with environmental and social value, Sumitomo Bakelite has been searching for new materials and innovative production technologies from a medium- to long-term perspective.

Through this investment in UMI Fund No. 3, the company will support the commercialization of next-generation promising materials and chemical start-ups. Also, it will contribute to solving social issues by developing functional chemicals in line with the SDGs. To this end, it will explore knowledge in three strategic areas (ICT, Mobility, and Healthcare).
